Inspiring kick-off for gender equality in sport initiative in belgrade In the capital city of Serbia, Belgrade, a key moment happened as the kick-off meeting for the "Re-imagining the Playing Field - a Gender Equality in Sport Project" (GESP) marked the beginning of an inspiring initiative. The meeting, set the stage for implementing GESP, aiming to address gender disparities in the sports field. With a detail agenda, attendees from partnering organizations discuss about the various aspects of the project, starting with the LeaderShe project presentation.

The LeaderShe project, implemented by one of our partners – RK Beograd, was highlighted as a source of inspiration for GESP project. LeaderShe showcased successful strategies and best practices in promoting gender equality in sports. Participants gained insights into the power of inclusive practices, leadership development and fostering a gender-friendly environment in different types of sports.

Project overview and objectives

The GESP project, part of the ERASMUS-SPORT-2023 program, is titled "Re-imagining the Playing Field - a Gender Equality in Sport Project." It seeks to tackle the ongoing issue of gender inequality in sports by promoting inclusive practices and building the capacity of organizations to implement gender equality policies.

The project's c approach includes public awareness campaigns, training sessions and a podcast series, "Breaking Barriers: Women in Sport," designed to highlight the experiences and challenges faced by women in sports.

Key objectives and partners:

  • The project aims to increase awareness about gender disparities in sports, using various media and outreach strategies.
  • GESP will provide workshops and training to sports professionals, including athletes, coaches, and referees, to foster gender-sensitive environments.
  • The initiative will engage with sports clubs, governing bodies, and local authorities to advocate for gender equality in sports policies and practices.

The meeting was attended by representatives from various partnering organizations, including Knowledge Infusion, Handbal club Belgarde, Society support alliance, Podkast.rs (Seriba), Football association Braganca (Portugal), Oviedo Phoenix (Spain), Pendik Municipality (Turkey),  Association for progress, education and lobbying and female footbal club Borec, both from North Macedonia.

The GESP project plans to conduct several workshops, public campaigns and a podcast series aimed at fostering a more inclusive sports culture. The project is set to engage a wide audience, including sports professionals and the general public, to address and overcome the barriers to gender equality in sports. These initiatives will not only aim to raise awareness and build capacity but also foster an inclusive environment where all participants can thrive regardless of gender.
